Big, perhaps these 3 letters best describes a company who has established itself as one of the frontrunners in the webhosting industry. In order to get a better grasp of what big really means, how about a webhosting company with over 40,000 servers and a clientele of over 6 million customers worldwide.
Currently, close to 8 million domains are registered under the company’s servers, including the biggest companies in the world. The company has also showed strong growth through the years and has over 6,000 personnel currently employed. Of these, more than 2,000 employees are tasked with maintaining and developing the company’s webhosting services.
The Good
- Technology – 1&1 uses top of the line equipment from computer manufacturing giants Cisco and Juniper. All systems are redundant and are maintained by highly trained professionals. Servers are constantly monitored for continuous and uninterrupted services.
Customers are assured of 99.9 percent uptime and data speeds that exceed industry standards. The company also has partnerships with companies such as Google and Microsoft which helps them deliver better services to their customers.
- Control Panel – 1&1’s control panel is user friendly and one of the easiest to use in the market. It features a load of features which makes creating a website simple even for starters.
The site also offers a lot of guides to help webmasters setup their websites and tips on how to get them running. I’ve tried a lot of webhosting providers in the past but 1&1’s control panel was simply one of the best.
- Pricing – 1&1 offers a wide variety of services which is tailored to meet the needs of webmasters to users who simply would like to get their blogs rolling. Pricing is competitive, and a visit to another webhost provider with a similar service would give you the impression of how much money you could save.
Packages begin from $3.99 and increase a couple of more dollars for more advance services. Great discounts could also be found when enrolling long term. Another cool thing is it allows customers to setup several websites under 1 domain, an excellent way of saving a couple of more dollars.
The Bad
Most complains we’ve been hearing from 1&1’s customers is the difficulty of migrating their websites once they’ve enrolled for the service. For a company who employs thousands of employees, making sure that everyone’s on the same page is something that should be considered. In fact a feeling of frustration set in when I called customer service when a simple question on how to setup my website with their services was not satisfactorily answered.
Analysis
Pricing and reliability seems to be the company’s strongest points. Those looking for a flexible and easy to use webhosting service, 1&1’s services definitely deserve a second look. However, the lack of customer support from a big company such as 1&1 is certainly a surprise. But for beginners who are just learning the ropes and are on a budget, 1&1’s services and prices comes on top of the heap.
